thinking about going on exchange

thinking about going on exchange

Postby vanity » Sat Sep 17, 2011 11:11 am

I would either go to New York or LA...

I am not really sure what or where to go though nor what to expect for rent.

I generally go for nicer areas - I think I would struggle to find somewhere more expensive than Sydney >.< so over priced here... :( buying is basically out of the question anywhere within an hour of the city :'(

Would anyone have anywhere to recommend? To give an idea I would likely go to UCLA or NYU...

Go Cali. You'll be close to some fleet members. It's a 2 hour flight here.
I've been finding cheap deals to Asia out of LA so I may use it to connect through in the future. I'll pick you, Hychu, and Mega up along the way and our merry journeys can begin.
Also, I assume you know about airline status miles etc - LA is a great one for mileage runs as well as Dallas.

ooo come to cali!
LA and NY are both expensive in terms of rent, but comparing the two, LA is cheaper i think lol (i can probably ask some of my friends about the approx. rent in LA)
(there is always an option of living further away in NY and get to where you want thru the subway, which is something that LA doesnt have).
Anyways, I dont know much about NY or the universities over there. UCLA is an excellent school, but yes, research on the business school rankings as it may not be the best out of all the universities in southern california.
Hychu and I went to UC Irvine (45min - 1hr south of UCLA). i dont think we're that well known for our business school, but the city is a pretty nice and small suburb + close to beach.
I'm not a big fan of UCSD. plus it's more known for its science departments so its probably not the best choice.
yeah, I'm biased towards the california schools (im not a very city person), but these are the three schools im more familiar with >.<

One thing for sure tho - you'll get the better weather in southern california muahahaha. However, you miiiight get to see snow in the winter in NY - something I want to experience >.<
(in terms of driving distance, from south to north, it is San diego -> 1~1.5hr -> irvine -> 1 hr -> LA. Come any where near here and hychu and i could visit JAJAJAJA

Snow is fun to see at first. Then you try to live your life or do anything normal in it and you start hating it. Snow is great when you have a day off and DON'T need to do anything.

I would only go for 6 months I think... although if I get a job it isn't out of the question that I would stay on.

I need to work out exactly what universities I can go to. I am using what universities MBA students can go to as a basis for mine so it is likely that it is wrong, but hopefully not too wrong? This is the list I think I have to choose from (I have to pick at least 6 and have no guarantee I will get them...)

In order of rank (Forbes):
3rd - Chicago Booth
4th - Wharton
6th - Dartmouth
7th - Kellogg
8th - Cornell
12th - Duke
14th - Michigan
16th - UNC
17th - Texas
18th - NYU
20th - UCLA (anderson)
32nd - Rochester

Other possibilities are Wellesley, Boston College, Georgetown, NYU, UCD, UCI, UCR, UCSD, UCSB, UCSC, and a few more (but not worth mentioning since they are in places I don't really want to go)

I think my main attraction to NY would be that I think it would be a good experience to live there. I found LA very similar to Sydney - so in regards to an 'experience' it might not be the greatest, but it would still be fun too. Also, as mako said, it is the closest to home I can get. However, I have relatives in the UK (my dad is English) so East coast also has some benefits. It would be nice to see my grandpa as I only see him a couple of times a decade living down under.

I would also consider uni's in San Francisco or part of ivy league (In this case Cornell, Penn and Dartmouth).

Hmmm.. i need to get a definitive list of universities.

Any vague ideas on rent would be good though. More for knowing a ball park weekly figure to go into how much I need to save >.<

I guess Wharton would make sense from an employability perspective. Hmm...
